Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
